For Mr. McCain, diplomacy is inferior to aggression. His world is a brutish, cynical place, where power is worshiped, weakness is despised, and all rivalries are zero-sum. He sees the decline of American influence in the wake of the disastrous Bush administration as the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century." He does not accept that America's neighbors, least of all [fill in the blank], are independent countries. To him, they are America's "near abroad" and must be brought back under Washington's dominion by any means necessary.
It really is always projection with these people.
