White Privilege

This is something I never truly appreciated when I was a young man.  I used to jokingly refer to my immunity from profiling, but it took me a long time to imagine myself in the opposite position.  Frankly I don't know how I'd contain myself if the shoe was on the other foot. 

We need to change a lot of things.  A good place to start is stop and frisk, and ending the insane, unjust and outrageously costly "War on Drugs".

NYT On The Shabby Treatment of Sal Albanese

Sal Albanese is not my candidate for a variety of reasons.  Nonetheless he seems like a genuinely good guy, serious, with truly excellent policy positions.  It's shameful that the televised debates exclude this man and heap attention on the absurd vanity campaign of Anthony Weiner. 

That said, the most important role for progressive Democrats in this primary is to rally behind the progressive candidate that can beat Chris Quinn and the big money.  Hands down that is Bill deBlasio, and not in a compromise either.  Bill is at once the most progressive candidate in the race AND the candidate with the wherewithal to beat Quinn and win the general.

So while it would be completely irresponsible to vote for Sal in this election, he deserves to be taken more seriously than the traveling sideshows that have dominated this cycle's media narrative.

Court Upholds Restraining Order Against SUNY

"Public Advocate Bill de Blasio had procured the restraining order—the third issued since March—last month just as SUNY Downstate officials were diverting ambulances and alerting staff they should vacate the premises of the 155-year-old health center. de Blasio's lawyers assert that SUNY Downstate has violated the law by preventing individuals from receiving medical care and should face criminal penalties."
