Mayoral Bid A Liu-sing Proposition

John Liu Denied Matching Funds

John Liu's actually done a pretty fine job as comptroller as far as I can tell.  And he's clearly a capable and ambitious guy.  But as I said at the beginning, he should have stood for reelection and let the scandal fizzle out. He was too damaged to have a legitimate shot at Gracie Mansion this cycle.  The CFB decision is the final nail in the coffin for this campaign.

The New York Times Discovers Bill deBlasio, Next Mayor of New York City

The Times is a little late to the party, but better late than never.  Citywide media are starting to notice the candidate that knowledgeable progressive Democrats have been supporting for many months.  The media narratives of this election cycle have been endlessly frustrating for people who follow city politics closely. The endless parade of articles about "prohibitive front runner" Christine Quinn, followed by breathless non-stop coverage of Anthony Weiner, who never stood a ghost of a chance in the upcoming primary; precious few column inches on the most viable candidates.
In a mayor’s race crammed with celebrity razzle-dazzle, historic candidacies and tabloid turns, a gangly liberal from Brooklyn is quietly surging into the top tier of the field by talking about decidedly unglamorous topics: neglected hospitals, a swelling poverty rate and a broken prekindergarten system.
Now that Anthony D. Weiner’s campaign has imploded, Bill de Blasio, the public advocate, is drawing new energy and voter interest to a candidacy that presents the most sweeping rejection of what New York City has become in the past 12 years — a city, he says, that is defined by its yawning inequities.
“We are not, by our nature, an elitist city,” he told a group of young Democrats a few nights ago at a cramped bar in Brooklyn. “We are not a city for the chosen few.”
I give Bloomberg plenty of credit for the things he's gotten right.  But he's absolutely fallen down on the job when it comes to services for the vast majority of NYC's population.  Bloomberg is a guy that's utterly out of touch with the realities of daily life for working people in this city.  After 12 years with a billionaire at the helm, New York could use a Mayor who appreciates what its like to live a working class existence in Brooklyn.

Local Civics Join Public Advocate deBlasio's Lawsuit To Keep LICH Alive

The Brooklyn Eagle was there, along with NY1 and a host of other media:

The Boerum Hill Association, Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association, Cobble Hill Association, Brooklyn Heights Association, Wyckoff Gardens Association and Riverside Tenants’ Association have joined as full partners a legal action to avert the shutdown, de Blasio said.
Of course Maria Pagano and I stood with Bill behalf of the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association:
“Closing this hospital would be a crushing blow to the thousands of Brooklynites who rely on [LICH] for care, and for all our families who will have to travel miles to the nearest hospital. said Gary Reilly, Executive Board Member of the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association. “SUNY should work with the community to find other ways of sustaining our hospital before shutting the doors of this institution.”
When our then one year old daughter couldn't breathe in the middle of the night, we went to LICH - and we were taken care of.  When a good friend and colleague suffered a stroke in recent years, LICH was there - and my friend is still here.

We need a mayor and a governor who will step up to keep this resource open to the public. How many more luxury condos does this community need?  The Bloomberg administration has been a one-trick pony. It's time for a change.

Montague Tunnel (R Train between Brooklyn and Manhattan) Closing TONIGHT

WeekdaysR

The Montague Tunnel will be closing at 11:30 tonight . . . for the next 14 months.  Fortunately there are robust alternatives on either side of the divide.

Hurricane Sandy did tremendous damage to NYC's transit system (and everything else).  Now we pay the fiddler.  In a massive undertaking the MTA will be completely refurbishing the tunnels and replacing systems, including moving sensitive signalling equipment out of harm's way.  For a fuller description of the closing (and the weekend map, which is different) go to Second Avenue Sagas.

DE BLASIO TO ANNOUNCE HOST OF BROOKLYN CIVIC GROUPS JOINING HIS LAWSUIT TO KEEP L.I.C.H. OPEN

And the Carroll Gardens Neighborhood Association is one of them.

If you're free Friday at 12:30, please show up to help demonstrate the community support for keeping LICH alive.  SUNY wants to pull the plug and place a Do Not Resuscitate order on our local hospital.  It's time we fought back against the bureaucrats who close down our hospital and sell the buildings to the highest bidder.

NEW YORK—Public Advocate Bill de Blasio will announce a host of Brooklyn civic organizations are signing on as co-plaintiffs in his lawsuit to keep Long Island College Hospital open.

WhenFriday, August 2, 12:30 p.m.
Where: Across from Long Island College Hospital, southwest corner of Hicks and Pacific Streets, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn
Who: Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Brooklyn civic leaders, doctors, nurses, health care workers

. . . AND YOU!

AmEx Chiseling Cardholders

When Is Your American Express Bill Due?

We have a couple of AMEX cards that we pay off every month (airline miles!).  I've been dimly aware of this practice and it drives me nuts.

What date are your bills due on? That is a simple question. I would surmise on any bill you receive — whether its electronic or in the mail — there is a clear date the bill is due. This is importan…
