City Council ‘participatory budgeting’ to expand; Meeting TONIGHT

An article below on the participatory budget process pioneered in NYC by Brad Lander and three other council members last year with great success.

The next round kicks off tonight with a meeting at the Carroll Gardens Library. From Council Member Lander's office:

If you had $1 million to spend on projects in your neighborhood, what would you do? Buy technology for a local school? Create public art? Expand the sidewalk at a dangerous intersection?

Give us your ideas at tonight's Participatory Budgeting Neighborhood Assembly at the Carroll Gardens Library. Here are the details:

After collecting ideas from area residents, volunteers will work to turn them into projects. In the spring, we will have a vote to decide which projects receive funding. Last year, the seven ideas with the most votes were funded, including outfitting a library room to host community meetings and performances; renovating paths and bringing more trash cans to Prospect Park; and a new community composting system that will take food scraps from our Greenmarkets.

Your idea could be one of this year's winners. I hope you can be there tonight.
